What Documents Are Needed

To open a Japan visa from Thailand, you will need:

  • a valid passport with two blank pages and an entry stamp to Thailand;
  • work authorization in Thailand;
  • a bank statement confirming income (in this specific case, 66,000 baht);
  • an employment letter confirming employment;
  • two photographs;
  • an application form, printed and completed twice;
  • an itinerary for travel in Japan, printed in two copies per person.

All forms are available on the website and must be submitted in paper form.

Documents for Family Members Traveling Together

If you are traveling to Japan together with close relatives — children, husband or wife — you will additionally need documents confirming family relationships. For example, when traveling with a spouse, you will need a legalized copy of a marriage certificate in English. This is especially important if the partner has a family visa.

Where to Submit Documents

Visa applications for Japan are submitted not at the embassy, but at an office building. You need to go to the fourth floor, find the glass elevator and the office on that floor. There are usually few people there, so the entire process takes 10 to 30 minutes — in this specific case, submission took about 15 minutes.

Passport Collection and Cost

After documents are accepted, there are two options to get your passport back: pick it up in person or receive it by mail. If you choose mail delivery, you need to pay for the shipping of two passports and the visa itself — the total amount was 1,800 baht. The visa was received a week after submission.
