How visa categories work

A visa is a state's permission to enter or stay for a defined purpose such as tourism, study, work, investment or family reunification. The category decides how long you may stay, whether you may work, and whether it can lead to permanent status.

US nonimmigrant visas (B1/B2, F-1, H-1B, L-1, O-1) grant temporary status, while immigrant categories such as EB-1A or family petitions end in a green card. The most common ground for refusing a US visitor visa is section 214(b), the presumption of immigrant intent, so coverage goes beyond paperwork to interview logic, the DS-160 and options after a denial.

Ukrainians with biometric passports can visit the Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but study, work or relocation require a national D visa or a residence permit. The UK processes most visas online through UKVI, and status is confirmed by an eVisa. For the US, choosing the right category matters most, because a B1/B2 visitor visa does not allow work and the H-1B and L-1 are tied to an employer. A refused applicant can usually reapply, but the new application has to address the reason for the refusal.
