A comparison of rental prices in Vancouver and Seattle shows that despite its reputation as one of the world’s most expensive cities, Vancouver is actually cheaper than the American city of Seattle. A two-bedroom apartment with two bathrooms in a good area of Vancouver can be rented for a sum that in Seattle barely covers the rent of a single bedroom.
What Vancouver offers
When searching for a two-bedroom apartment with two bathrooms in a new building with a modern kitchen and interior in Vancouver, options were found for up to 3000 Canadian dollars. One of the reviewed options cost 2800 Canadian dollars — approximately 2100 US dollars.
This is not about downtown Vancouver itself, where rent is higher due to dense development, transportation, and traffic congestion, but about neighbourhoods slightly outside the centre — with good transit connectivity and proximity to the ocean.
What Seattle offers for the same money
In the Seattle area, 30–40 minutes’ drive from the city, for a sum of around 2100 US dollars, even renting a single bedroom is difficult. A two-bedroom apartment in a new complex with a pool, gym, barbecue area, and lounge zone cannot be found for that price.
In the case examined, a one-bedroom apartment was previously rented for 1700 dollars, but this was a brand-new complex with income restrictions for tenants — meaning it’s not accessible to everyone. As of now, there are no units available in such a complex. A two-bedroom apartment even in the same complex costs more, and living there practically requires having a car.
Differences in infrastructure
Beyond the price gap, there’s also a difference in the convenience of living without a car. In Vancouver, even neighbourhoods outside downtown have well-developed transit infrastructure. In Seattle’s suburban areas, infrastructure is worse, and getting around without a personal vehicle is difficult.
