Almost all work permit procedures in Canada are conducted online through the IRCC system. Exceptions are rare and mostly apply to temporary permits for people in the country with entry restrictions. If you’re submitting documents from within Canada, the process remains online.

When the Process Goes Online

Practically all work permit procedures at IRCC are organized to be completed electronically. This applies to routine permit renewals, obtaining additional work time when limited by passport expiry, and most temporary work visas. Online submission significantly simplifies the process and reduces processing times.

Rare Exceptions: When Paper Documents Are Required

Paper procedures occur in exceptional circumstances — for example, when applying for temporary residence permits for people with entry bans who are on Canadian territory. However, if you’re applying for a temporary permit and are outside Canada, even if you have an entry ban, the process is still conducted online.

When You Need Clarification: The Difference Between Renewal and Extension

People often confuse “extending a work permit after graduation” with routine renewal. In fact, these are different procedures. Work permits for university and college graduates (Post-Graduation Work Permit, PGWP) are not “renewed” in the traditional sense. If you’ve been issued, for example, 3 years of PGWP but your passport expires in a year, you can request an extension to use your remaining time. This is not a new permit and not a standard renewal — it’s a request to access time that is already owed to you under the original decision. Such a request is submitted online and processed in the same category.

Practical Tips When Submitting

If you see instructions on the IRCC website to submit documents in paper form, this may be outdated information. In practice, many procedures that can technically be submitted on paper are actually processed online if you submit your application in electronic format. Verify current requirements before submission — IRCC technology and instructions are constantly evolving.
