Spain offers three main residency programs that can be obtained in three months. The fastest is the digital nomad visa, which doesn’t require a high income or your own business. Document review takes just one month, and the card is issued within 60–65 days.

Digital Nomad Visa: The Fastest Path

Spain is recognized as a leader in the speed of issuing residence permits for remote workers. The official review period from the time of application is 20 working days, to which is added the procedure for fingerprinting and card issuance.

The program is suitable for those who work remotely: as an employee, self-employed, or freelancer. The minimum income per person is 2763 euros per month. You need to have remote work with a foreign company located outside Spain and confirm your qualification through work experience or higher education.

The program is available to Russian citizens. Income can come from Russia from a Russian employer — this is even considered an advantage due to an agreement between Spain and Russia on the mutual offset of social contributions. This means that when employed by a Russian company, you do not need to pay social contributions in Spain.

You can submit documents even on a tourist Schengen visa. If you have a short-term visa, it’s not a problem: after submitting your application, you can stay in the country legally and immediately receive a residence permit for three years.

Family Benefits and Path to Permanent Residency

The residence permit is issued not only to the applicant but to all family members at the same time. The status is granted immediately for three years.

Five years of residence in nomad status lead to Spanish permanent residency, which is issued for 10 years and can simply be renewed. After obtaining permanent residency, you no longer need to maintain a certain level of income, as is required for nomads. A permanent resident can choose to work or not.

For those who want to get into the European Union as quickly as possible and have the freedom to move around Schengen countries, Spain’s digital nomad visa is the most suitable option.

Startup Visa: For Entrepreneurs

The startup visa has existed for a long time and is suitable for entrepreneurs and founders of business projects. Review of the project and issuance of a residence permit typically takes about three months from the date of application, which is longer than the nomad visa, but the process has its advantages.

Obtaining a startup visa does not require large capital. The residence permit is issued not only to the applicant but to all family members for three years with the right to work in Spain as a self-employed person or as a company founder.

This is a real path to permanent residency and citizenship. The main difficulty is preparing the project and business plan: approval is only given to well-developed ideas.

Residence Permit for Highly Qualified Specialists

The third option is residency for highly qualified specialists. It is suitable for those who already have a job offer from a Spanish company ready to submit documents through an expedited procedure.

Review can take as little as 20–30 working days, which makes it possible to obtain official working status in Spain. However, there is a significant limitation: the applicant remains tied to the employer. If you lose your job, you lose your residency status, which makes this path less convenient compared to the previous two options.

How to Choose the Right Option

Student visas in recent years are reviewed much longer, so if the goal is a quick move while maintaining legal status, you should consider a nomad visa or startup visa.

Spain remains one of the most efficient countries in the European Union for issuing a resident card. The choice between startup visa and nomad visa depends on your situation: the former is suitable for business, the latter for remote work.
