This is not a portfolio and CV competition like the Global Talent program. It’s not a work visa requiring a Spanish employer or a startup route that demands proof of project innovation. Spain looks at one thing: remote work income and how transparent it appears in your documents.
Employees of foreign companies with employment contracts, self-employed individuals with regular income, and freelancers all qualify. Profession doesn’t matter: designers, managers, marketers, social media specialists—all are eligible. Higher education is not required; a work record extract or proof of three years’ experience can serve that role.
What income Spain recognizes
The minimum threshold is €2,850 per month before taxes. Key conditions: these must be regular payments from a legal entity (company, LLC, corporation) over the last 3 months, transferred to the applicant’s personal bank account.
Eligible examples include: an employment contract with a Russian company and salary transfers to an account in Russia with transfer statements, or self-employment in Russia with regular payments from legal entities. Spain does not recognize cryptocurrency income, investment income, trading income, or passive income from property rental, as it’s difficult to prove their stability and legality through a contract.
Common documentation issues
Often people come for consultation assuming their income qualifies, only to discover that money arrives haphazardly from various individuals or that the contract is structured differently than the program requires. This is not a reason to abandon the residence permit idea.

What to verify before applying
Before preparing your case, ask yourself a few questions:
— What is your monthly income in euros and how frequently does it arrive? — Which legal entity pays you and is it named in your contract? — Is it an employment contract or a service agreement? Many specialists don’t read their contract and don’t know their legal status, though this matters for your document package. — Where are you located now and how will you obtain a Schengen visa if you don’t already have one? — When do you plan to arrive in Spain?
These questions determine which documents to prepare and how strong your case is.
Visa duration depends on your documents
A visa can be issued for 3 years—one of the program’s main advantages. However, the actual duration depends on the period your documents cover.
If your employment contract is valid for all 3 years, health insurance covers at least one year, and your salary meets minimums, you’ll get a residence permit for the full 3 years. If insurance is shorter, income is below requirements, or the contract ends sooner, the visa may be issued for a shorter period.
A 3-year term gives you time to decide: stay in Spain, pay taxes, and legalize your status there, or obtain residence in another EU country. You can only work remotely on this visa, not for a Spanish employer. If you later find a Spanish employer, you can change your status locally.
No quotas—only requirement compliance
The Digital Nomad Visa program has no quota limit on approvals. This means if your documents meet all criteria, approval is virtually guaranteed. Spain doesn’t choose between candidates or rank them by job prestige or salary level. Either your documents meet requirements and you get approval, or they don’t—in which case you may receive an additional request or rejection.
