Spain’s Digital Nomad program grants a 3-year residence permit to almost anyone who works remotely for a foreign company and earns at least 2850 euros per month. Minimal education and experience requirements, documents can be filed online right from Spain — and you get your resident card within 2.5–3 months.

Who the Digital Nomad program is designed for

The program is aimed at those who already work remotely and receive stable income from a foreign company. This can be an employment contract with an employer or a service agreement if you’re a sole proprietor or self-employed. The main thing is to prove to Spain that you currently work and plan to receive stable income over the next three years.

You don’t need to look for a job in Spain or get Spanish employment. On the contrary: the whole point of the program is that your source of income already exists outside the country, and you’ll continue your remote work while staying in Spain.

Requirements for the contract and experience

If you’re an employee, the employment contract must be signed for more than 3 years, with an employer that has existed for at least a year. You must have worked under this contract for at least 3 months before applying for residency.

For sole proprietors and self-employed people, you need a service agreement with a legal entity that has existed for more than a year, with regular incoming payments under this agreement.

The main advantage of the program: Spain only checks bank statements for the last 3 months. That means you have time to prepare. If your documents aren’t quite in order, you can spend 3 months before arriving in Spain organizing payments in the right format and still get approved.

Qualification doesn’t require a degree

A higher education degree helps, but it’s not mandatory. If you have a diploma related to your field, get it apostilled, translate it into Spanish — and that’s enough.

If you don’t have a diploma or it’s unrelated to your work, there are three other ways to confirm your qualification:

  1. An employment contract of more than 3 years with one company. This automatically confirms that you’re a qualified specialist.

  2. A work record with a total of 3 years of experience, even if gained across different companies.

  3. A history of working at your company for more than 3 years in the same position.

The minimum required experience is 3 years. The profession doesn’t matter: it can be marketing, design, project management, consulting — any activity that can be delivered online.

Minimum income and the source of payments

In 2026, the main applicant must earn at least 2850 euros per month before taxes. If you’re filing with a spouse and children, the minimum increases.

Spain looks not just at the figure in the contract, but also compares the employment contract, payslips, and what actually arrives on your card. The most important thing: payments must come from the company you have a contract with. Crypto, passive income, savings — don’t qualify. Spain needs proof that you have a legitimate employer who officially transfers money to you.

Health insurance and social contributions

If you’re filing as an employee, private health insurance is mandatory. Travel insurance and bank-provided coverage won’t work — you need coverage in Spain for the whole year.

If you’re filing as a sole proprietor or self-employed person, private insurance isn’t required, but after your residency is approved, you must register as self-employed (autónomo) in Spain and start paying social contributions. In the first year, it’s a fixed monthly amount withdrawn from your account. After the first year, the amount depends on your income.

This is an important decision that affects your expenses: you need to figure out in advance how you’ll be registered with the Spanish authorities to calculate the additional costs.

How to file documents online and get your card

One of the program’s main advantages: documents are filed online using a digital signature, nothing needs to be submitted in person. The process takes 1–2 business days, after which you receive confirmation that your application is under review. This document allows you to stay in Spain even after your tourist visa expires.

You can arrive in Spain on a tourist Schengen visa (even one not issued by Spain) and file the documents locally. The visa can be short — 2–3 weeks — but that’s enough: you’ll be able to stay while waiting for the result.

Timeline:

  1. Arrival and online filing — 1–2 days.

  2. Notification to the main applicant — roughly a month later.

  3. Notification to family members — one to two weeks after the main applicant.

  4. Appointment for fingerprints at the police station — after a positive decision.

  5. Residency card ready — 2–3 weeks after fingerprints.

The residence permit is issued for 3 years right away. In terms of timeline and ease of filing, this program is one of the best options in Europe.
