Spain issues a 3-year residence permit under the digital nomad programme to almost anyone who meets income requirements. The visa remains valid even if you don't live in the country.
A digital nomad visa is a residence authorization for people who work remotely for employers or clients based outside the host country. Unlike a tourist stay or a non-lucrative permit, it lets the holder live in the country legally while earning income from abroad. Several EU states run such schemes, including Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Greece and Estonia, each under its own national rules.
Spain created its version through Law 28/2022, known as the Startup Law. Applicants can request a visa at a Spanish consulate or, if already lawfully in Spain, a residence permit from the Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos (UGE). Eligibility rests on a university degree or professional experience, an established relationship with the remote employer or clients, and proof that work for Spanish clients remains a minor share of total activity.
After approval, holders register their address on the padrón, give fingerprints and collect a TIE card from the police. Keeping the status depends on paying social security contributions, either in Spain or under a bilateral agreement, and on filing tax returns.
