How a UK fee waiver works

A fee waiver lets a person applying to the Home Office ask not to pay the application fee because they cannot afford it. It is mainly available on human rights routes, such as family and private life applications for limited leave to remain (FLR(FP)), rather than on points-based work or study visas. A granted waiver can also cover the Immigration Health Surcharge.

The request is made online before the main application. It must include evidence of income, savings and essential outgoings, such as bank statements and tenancy papers. The Home Office considers whether the applicant is destitute or would be made destitute by paying, or whether there are exceptional financial circumstances, including the welfare of a child. Once the waiver is granted, the applicant submits the main application within the deadline set in the decision.

The UK fee waiver is separate from the US equivalent, where USCIS uses Form I-912 for certain benefit requests.
