What Canada's Job Bank Is

Job Bank is the Government of Canada's national employment website, operated by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Despite the name, it has nothing to do with banking: it publishes vacancies from Canadian employers alongside wage and job outlook data organized by National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes.

For foreign workers, Job Bank matters because of the Labour Market Impact Assessment process. An employer applying to ESDC for an LMIA is generally required to advertise the position on Job Bank first, so many listings come from companies already prepared to hire from abroad. A listing that welcomes applicants abroad is still not a work permit: after a positive LMIA, the worker applies to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the permit itself.

Applications go directly to the employer, usually with a Canadian-style resume. That format typically leaves out a photo, date of birth and marital status, and it is tailored to each specific vacancy.
