The UK offers several routes to citizenship in 5–6 years without giving up your first passport. It’s one of the most stable countries for a second citizenship, but not suitable for everyone: the path goes through a work visa, innovative business, or Global Talent status — for IT specialists, scientists, and artists.

Three Main Types of Visas

The UK immigration system is selective, but there are clear pathways for certain categories. Work visas (Skilled Worker, Healthcare Worker) are issued for 5 years, leading to ILR through 5 years, then citizenship after another 1 year — total 6 years. Suitable for those with an employer in the UK.

Entrepreneur visas (Innovator, sometimes Global Mobility) are for people with innovative businesses. ILR under an accelerated programme is granted after 3 years, citizenship after another 2 years. They require demonstrating business development results within the country.

Global Talent — a visa for achievements in IT, science, or arts. Issued without requiring an employment contract, allowing you to work independently or in a startup. ILR after 3 years, citizenship 2 years after that.

Residence Requirements for ILR

To apply for ILR, you must have lived in the UK for 183 days per year for 3 or 5 consecutive years — depending on visa type. This means you’ll be a tax resident for about half the year.

When applying for ILR you need: proof of fee payment (around £2,000), proof of residence (utility bills, rental agreements), tax returns. Everything is submitted online. The decision comes within 2 months, and you receive ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) — essentially the same as residence permit, but issued for 10 years.

Residence Requirements for Citizenship

During the 10-year validity of ILR you can apply for citizenship. For this you need:

— to have lived in the country for 2 consecutive years if the path to ILR took 3 years; — to have lived for 1 year if the path took 5 years; — to be a tax resident; — not to have been absent for more than 450 days throughout your entire path to citizenship (5–6 years); — to provide the same documents as when applying for ILR.

Giving up your first citizenship is not required. Everything is submitted online and processed quickly: there are cases of approval in as little as 3 weeks.

Advantages of the UK Route

The UK does not require changing your first passport, which sets it apart from some European countries. Moreover, it cannot revoke your residence status if you meet the conditions — unlike some European programmes that issue residence permits for 3–4 years under a 5-year pathway, then require renewal or reissuing.

Only English language is used with no requirement to learn others. Currently, B1 level is required, though this may change to B2 soon. The British passport itself is considered one of the strongest in the world.

The UK notably does not treat residence as portions of 3 years at each stage, as some European and American countries do, making the pathway more predictable.

Who This Route Suits

The route works for people who can confirm the status of IT specialist, scientist, or artist (achievement in the field doesn’t need to be at Oscar level, demonstrating a contribution to the area matters). For work visas you need an employer in the UK. For entrepreneurs — a genuinely operating innovative project.

If you fit one of these categories, the UK offers one of the most stable and predictable paths to second citizenship in the modern world.
