A court ruling obligated the State Department to announce new DV-2027 lottery dates no later than October 29, 2026. Registration should open by November 1 for 30 days, and selection notifications will be sent by December 3, 2026. Here’s what you need to prepare now.

New Lottery Timeline

Under the court ruling, the State Department must announce the registration date and requirements no later than October 29, 2026. Application submission will open no later than November 1 and last 30 days. Winners will be notified no later than December 3, 2026. Visa issuance must be completed by September 30, 2027.

November 1 is the deadline for opening, not a confirmed start date. At the time of the court ruling, applications were not yet being accepted.

Country of Birth and Education

Eligibility is determined by country of birth, not citizenship or residence. Exception: you may use your spouse’s country of birth if applying jointly, or one parent’s country under certain conditions.

The principal applicant must have a high school education equivalent to American secondary education. This does not mean you must have studied exactly 12 years in your country.

An alternative to education is two years of work experience within the last five years. However, not every profession qualifies: its eligibility is verified against the U.S. Department of Labor database.

Passport and Photograph

The principal applicant must have a valid passport. You will need scans of the first page with personal data and the page with your signature. It’s recommended to check your passport’s expiration date and prepare the necessary pages in advance.

The photograph must have been taken within the last 6 months. According to published requirements, it must be a JPEG file sized 600 by 600 pixels, no more than 240 kilobytes. You cannot reuse a photograph from a previous application. Before submitting, always verify the specifications according to the DV-2027 instructions.

Family Composition and Including Family Members

Your spouse or partner must be listed in the application. You must also include all living children under age 21 who are unmarried—biological children, officially adopted children, and stepchildren. They must be listed according to instructions, even if they live separately and do not plan to relocate.

Each family member needs a separate photograph. Exception: this does not apply to spouses and children who are already U.S. citizens or green card holders.

A separate rule applies if spouses are legally separated—simply living apart is not sufficient. Failing to list someone who should be included may result in rejection not only for you but also for family members when applying for visas.

Registration Fee and Payment

The registration fee is $1 per principal applicant’s application. If your form includes four people, the fee remains one dollar—not per family member.

Accepted payment methods: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Venmo, PayPal. If you are selected and proceed with an immigrant visa through a consulate, the visa fee is $330 per applicant and is not refunded if denied. Medical examination and other expenses are paid separately.

Financial Requirements and Application Submission

Applications are submitted only through the official website dvprogram.state.gov. Each person is allowed one application per registration period. Carefully verify your information and save the confirmation page with your number—you’ll need it to check your results.

When obtaining a visa, you may be required to provide proof of financial means, a job offer, financial support from another person, or form I-134. However, it would be incorrect to claim that every participant must have a sponsor.

Selection in the lottery does not guarantee visa approval. After selection, preparation time will be limited—visa issuance is capped at September 30, 2027. Therefore, you should not quit your job or sell property until your lottery win is confirmed.

Checking Your Result

The State Department does not send letters to lottery winners. Results are checked exclusively through the official Entry Status Check service on the program website. If you lose your application number, the website provides a recovery option.
