The UK talent visa for IT specialists has become harder to obtain: over the past eighteen months, requirements for proof of achievement have tightened, and refusals have increased. However, among similar programmes in other countries, the British visa remains the most effective — you can appeal within a month and resubmit within two weeks.

How Requirements Have Changed

Over the past few years, Global Talent requirements have gradually become stricter. If you look at cases of people who received the visa two or three years ago, they would not pass with the same package of documents now — they would need to strengthen it.

In autumn and winter of last year, a critical turning point occurred. The technical agency Teknation, which reviews applications, changed leadership and began checking documents more carefully for forgeries. A year and a half ago, you could prepare an application almost entirely in Photoshop and get approval. Now the agency requires that attached materials be at least somewhat verifiable.

There were many more refusals, and many people decided the programme no longer worked. However, in practice, the essence changed: the agency simply wants to see real, live, human documents, clearly written by a specific person. The narrative format itself changed, along with the method of compiling evidence. After adapting to the new requirements, even in the IT field, the number of positive responses increased.

Refusals and Periodic Crises

The application review process is unstable. Periodic crises occur — one or two times a year, when the number of refusals suddenly increases.

In 2023, such a crisis happened in March, when Teknation nearly lost its status as a competent authority. They did not win a new grant, and a scandal began about whether they would stop reviewing applications. Many people rushed to submit documents while the review was happening. In reality, nothing occurred, Teknation continued working, but there were indeed many refusals.

In 2024-2025, waves of refusals came in autumn and spring. This winter and spring, there was another spike. Sometimes at the same time, the same case can receive different decisions — this indicates the opacity of the system.

The UK does not set quotas like the US. According to representatives of the Home Office, which oversees other visa programmes, the system works like this: at some point, the ministry comes and tells the department to issue refusals instead of approvals. This is probably related to exhausting an internal limit, although officially there are no quotas. On the other hand, as the programme becomes more popular, requirements increase — candidates are selected from an ever-larger pool of potential applicants.

Why Global Talent Remains the Best Option

Despite the complications, the UK is advantageous for IT professionals for several reasons.

The programme grants full employment rights and the ability to start your own business or work as self-employed. After five years, the visa holder can transition to unlimited resident status without additional conditions — practically an automatic path to a passport without unnecessary bureaucracy and numerous documents.

It is often compared to the American EB-1 programme — they are indeed similar. However, currently the USA is a more difficult route. There is a ban on issuing green cards, the review process itself is stricter and slower than in the UK.

Appeals and Resubmission

A huge advantage of the UK is how straightforward it is to deal with refusals. All applications are submitted online, and an application can be filed in literally a single day. The review process is also quick — two or three weeks.

If you receive a refusal, you can appeal the same day. Within a maximum of 28 days, you will receive a decision on your appeal. The case can be reworked in one or two weeks and a new decision received in a couple of weeks.

The only cost when resubmitting is the £500 fee. However, dealing with refusals in the UK is straightforward, efficient, and fast. This is a major advantage specifically for the UK — you can turn a refusal into approval in one and a half months.

A Trend Across All Countries

The complication of migration processes is a global trend. It is happening in all countries simultaneously. Specialists interested in relocating to the UK should not fear growing requirements — this is a universal process, and there is no sign of it reversing.
