The UK’s new migration reform will extend the path to a passport from 5 to 11 years for most migrants. However, for Global Talent visa holders or those earning over £50,000 per year on Skilled Worker visas, a passport will remain accessible in 4–5 years.

How the New Reform Changes Timelines to Citizenship

According to a document proposed by the Home Office in November 2025, all major migrant categories will need to obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) no sooner than 10 years, and then wait another year before applying for citizenship. After document review, a passport can be issued within a few weeks—there are cases where citizens received it just 3 weeks after submission.

For those who remain unemployed, receive benefits, or are in an illegal status, timelines only increase. On benefits this could be 20 years, in an illegal situation up to 30 years. This policy is aimed at protecting the healthcare, education and social assistance systems from being overwhelmed.

Global Talent: Passport in 3 Years Before ILR

Global Talent visa holders will receive a benefit: ILR in 3 years instead of the standard 10. The status applies only to the Exceptional Talent category. After obtaining ILR, another year is added before the right to apply for citizenship, plus time for document review.

In total: in the best case scenario, a passport can be obtained in 4–5 years. With luck—even in 4.5 years. A Global Talent visa also provides the advantage of status stability: unlike sponsored visas, it cannot be lost due to redundancy.

Skilled Worker: Benefit at Salary Above £50,000

For work visas (Skilled Worker), there are two salary tiers:

— £50,000 per year and above: 5 years to ILR; — £125,000 per year for three consecutive years: 3 years to ILR.

After obtaining ILR, a mandatory year of waiting is added. In total: 5–6 years or 4–5 years respectively. However, with a Skilled Worker visa there is a critical risk: if you are made redundant, you will lose your status and cannot continue accumulating service time. You would have to switch to the standard 10-year route.

Benefits of a British Passport

A British passport provides visa-free access to a large number of countries. Although the UK is not part of the Schengen area and separate permission is required for European visas, citizens can travel to Schengen countries for 90 days and then obtain residence permits without complications.

The passport has a high reputation with banks and financial institutions. Britain recognises the right of citizens to retain other nationalities, so renouncing your country of origin’s passport is not required. Tax policy towards high-earning workers is becoming stricter, however Global Talent visa holders avoid some tax obligations.

Challenges of Global Talent and Preparation Path

Global Talent visa is one of the most difficult to obtain. Designation requires recognition as an exceptional talent in your field. Criteria vary for different professions, but competition is high.

The process of preparing documents is not quick. Specialists recommend starting a year or two before the planned application. You need the right achievements, reputation in your field, and active work on your portfolio. Even with qualifications, most applicants will not get a visa on the first attempt.
