A federal court has ordered the US to launch the green card lottery around November 1, 2026, for one month. Among 21 million participants, only 55,000 green cards will be awarded, with a real winning chance of about 0.1%. The alternative is talent visas O-1 and EB-1A, offering up to 97% approval chances and the right to enter the US with your entire family.

What’s known about the DV-2027 lottery

Registration will begin no later than November 1, 2026, and will last exactly 30 days. For the first time, participation requires a fee — $1 per application. Petition review is scheduled for around May 2027, and green card issuance must be completed by September 30, 2027.

The lottery math is grim. With 21 million participants competing for 55,000 green cards, the formal winning probability is 0.25%. But that’s not the final calculation: winners list not only themselves but also family members — spouses and children — on the application. If an applicant’s number exceeds 30,000, the chance of getting a green card drops sharply. The realistic chance is estimated at 0.1%, or one in a thousand.

Talent visas: how they work

The O-1 visa lets you come to the US, start working, and bring your family. The process takes 6 to 9 months, with petitions reviewed in 15 days. The requirement is to prove three out of eight talent criteria. In practice, applicants submit five to seven criteria to boost approval chances.

The EB-1A visa is a direct path to a green card. It requires recognition in your industry and allows you to enter the US with residency and a green card for your entire family right away. After five years, you can apply for citizenship. Building the case takes about 12 months, and the whole process can take up to two years, but the result is permanent residency.

O-1 and EB-1A visas also serve as a platform for obtaining other green card categories: EB1B, EB-2, EB-3.

The main difference: control and probability

When applying for the lottery, the applicant has no control over the process. The number is drawn randomly, and the applicant waits for results month after month, unable to improve their case.

With talent visas, the situation is the opposite. The applicant controls the petition submission, can refine the case, and influence the evidence base. There’s also assurance that the documents meet immigration service standards. Approval chances for O-1 or EB-1A visas reach 97%.

The biggest mistake: procrastination

By delaying a talent visa application while waiting for lottery results, applicants lose time. A case under other categories loses weight due to so-called immigration inflation, where achievements or experience relevant at the time of filing become less convincing over time. In effect, the applicant bets on a dead horse in the lottery while losing real chances elsewhere.

If you have the opportunity to apply for a talent visa right now, don’t put it off hoping for the lottery.

How to improve your lottery odds

If a family still participates in the lottery, they should submit not one but two applications — for the husband and the wife. If there are children, they should also be included in the submissions. This won’t double the odds, but it will raise the probability at least a little.

A single application for one family member (say, only the mother or father) ignores potential opportunities for the rest.
