A Ukrainian carpenter with many years of experience but without a formal education diploma does not need to complete the full three-year Ausbildung to work in their profession in Germany. The Craft Chamber (Handwerkskammer) offers two ways to confirm professional skills without formal education — depending on experience and level of German language proficiency.

Why a Diploma Is Not Needed Here

If there is no formal education, there is nothing to recognize — submitting documents for recognition of a foreign diploma makes no sense in such a case. But this does not mean that years of professional experience are lost: German law provides separate procedures for those who learned their craft through practice rather than in a classroom.

The first step is to contact the Handwerkskammer, the craft chamber of your region, provide any available educational documents and work history, and clarify which of the two pathways would be suitable in your specific case.

First Pathway: Admission to the Gesellenprüfung Exam

This is admission to the journeyman exam without completing Ausbildung. It is provided for in the relevant Ordnung and is possible if the applicant can prove that they have worked in the profession for a period of at least one and a half times the established duration of Ausbildung. That is, if a carpenter’s work experience is on average more than three years, the person may be admitted to take the exam.

This pathway requires a sufficient level of German language proficiency, as the exam is conducted in German.

Second Pathway: Confirmation of Competencies Without a Formal Exam

This is the Feststellungsverfahren procedure — official establishment and confirmation of individual professional competence without taking a formal exam. The law defines the conditions for participation:

  • the applicant must be at least 25 years old;
  • they must not hold a professional diploma in the corresponding specialty;
  • it is necessary to confirm professional activity lasting at least one and a half times the established duration of Ausbildung;
  • it is necessary to prove that during this work professional skills were acquired;
  • the acquired competence must correspond to the competence of the German profession Tischler.
