The state Unfallkasse covers accidents only at work and on the way home — up to the building entrance, not the apartment door. Everything else — sports, home accidents, vacation, children’s activities — remains unprotected without private Unfallversicherung insurance. A private policy is inexpensive, but in practice it pays significantly higher amounts than the state scheme.
What state insurance covers and what it doesn’t
Everyone working in Germany is automatically covered by gesetzliche Unfallkasse — the state accident insurance fund. It pays compensation for accidents that occur at work or on the way home. The law is clear: the way home is covered only to the building entrance, not to the apartment door.
All situations outside these limits — sports, vacation, home accidents, children’s activities — are not covered by state insurance. For this, you need private insurance.
What is Unfallversicherung and how does it work
Private Unfallversicherung is a one-time payment of a large sum if disability remains after an injury: permanent physical or mental impairment. The degree of disability is determined using a special Gliedertaxe table — for example, loss of a thumb is rated at 20%, paralysis at 100%.
It’s important not to confuse this disability with disability status in Ukraine — they are different concepts with different criteria.
The insurance works everywhere: at work, at home, in sports, on vacation — both in Germany and abroad. If an accident happens at work, a person receives two payments: from the state Unfallkasse and from private insurance, with the private insurance paying significantly more depending on the coverage amount in the contract.
State Unfallkasse vs. private Unfallversicherung
What each type of insurance covers
| State Unfallkasse | Private Unfallversicherung | |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Covers | Covers (additionally) |
| Way home (to building entrance) | Covers | Covers (additionally) |
| Sports, vacation, home accidents | Does not cover | Covers |
| Medical equipment | — | Covers |
| Quick payout for fracture | — | up to 3,000 € |
| Payout for 100% disability | — | up to 300,000 € with 500% progression |
What is covered
In addition to the one-time disability payment, the insurance covers therapy, medical equipment — up to 10,000 €, consultations, cosmetic surgery and rescue operations. If an accident occurs, for example, in the mountains, a 500% progression applies.
A separate section covers quick payouts up to 3,000 € (Knochenbruchleistung): for a broken arm or leg, say after a bicycle fall, the amount is paid to your account quickly to cover small but urgent losses from the injury.
500% progression and additional support
Contracts include a 500% progression feature: if the coverage amount in the contract is 60,000 €, in case of 100% disability, the payout is not 60,000 € but up to 300,000 €. This provides funds for rehabilitation that might otherwise be insufficient.
When disability occurs under the terms of Unfallversicherung, the contract may include separate support sections: home help, cleaning, goods delivery, support for health recovery and therapy.

How much does a policy cost
In practice, a comprehensive policy covering all major risks costs approximately 8–15 € per month for a child and 20–30 € for an adult. Such insurance is especially relevant for those who ride motorcycles or bicycles, play sports, work in construction or manufacturing, as well as for children and teenagers.
