An employer may prefer a candidate with a job title — that’s intuitive. But in the Express Entry scoring system, this has no impact on your chances. The program looks at years of experience, not your current job status.
Work Experience Matters More Than Employment
In Express Entry, the decisive criterion is the number of years of professional experience in the past 10 years. If an unemployed applicant has 6 or more years of experience, their ranking will be higher than someone currently employed with two or three years of experience.
Thus, unemployment status is not an obstacle. The program does not distinguish between people based on whether they have a current employment contract.
Expression of Interest Without Employment
In the ARIMA system (Expression of Interest System), you can submit an expression of interest even if you are currently unemployed. The form has a field to mark your status as “unemployed.”
An expression of interest has strategic importance. You should view it as a serious intent, not as a way to grab attention. If you ignore invitations for a long time, the risk of receiving a refusal increases. Immigration authorities may reject your application on the grounds that you have not shown sufficient interest.
The Problem of Changing Occupation Codes
Changing your occupation code under the NOC (National Occupational Classification) during application processing is a complex issue requiring individual analysis. In one applicant’s case: their employer offered a position under a different NOC code, but this created serious complications when their application was being reviewed.
In the Express Entry program, a code change is unsuccessful at processing levels 1 and 3, but may succeed if it’s level 2. However, each case requires verification based on the applicant’s age, nature of employment, work history, and family status. When you submit your application, unforeseen circumstances may arise that will affect the outcome.
Responsibility When Filling Out Your Profile
If a friend or family member fills out your profile, this requires special care. Errors or negligence in completing the applicant’s profile, who trusted you with it, can lead to rejection.
Completeness and accuracy of information are just as important as choosing the right program. An expression of interest is an official document, and its contents must be truthful. When the program sees you as a serious candidate for permanent residence and not simply trying to attract attention, the decision is made more thoughtfully.
