How Express Entry works

Express Entry is the online system that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has used since January 2015 to manage applications for permanent residence. It is not a visa or a program in its own right. It covers three federal economic streams, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class, plus part of the Provincial Nominee Program.

Candidates submit an online profile and are ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which scores age, education, official-language ability and work experience. IRCC then holds rounds of invitations, and profiles above the cut-off receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. Since 2023, alongside general and program-specific rounds, IRCC has also run category-based draws aimed at French speakers and at candidates with experience in selected occupations.

An invitation is not an approval: an officer still reviews the documents, compares claimed work history with the duties of the stated NOC code and checks admissibility before deciding. A refused applicant can seek judicial review at the Federal Court of Canada or create a new Express Entry profile.
