When obtaining an immigration visa based on marriage, the visa officer checks whether the couple actually lives as a family. A joint bank account is one of the key documents confirming this. If the account is opened but not used, or topped up only once before submission, it looks like an attempt to tick a checklist rather than reflect a real shared life.
What a Visa Officer Says About a Joint Account
The officer sees an account opened months ago but active only in June and July with a single transfer from wedding funds. The question becomes obvious: “Why do you have a joint account that you don’t use?”
This doesn’t suggest marriage. Roommates don’t pay from one account either — each pays their share. And if the husband pays for rent, the wife pays for everything else, and the joint account sits empty, it looks exactly like roommates living together, not spouses.
The visa officer may conclude that the couple opened the account solely to provide it as a document proving marriage. And this will count against them, not in their favor.
How Joint Account Usage Should Look
A joint account is not just a piece of paper in your document package. It should be real financial activity that reflects shared living. Six months of well-used account activity is far more convincing than an account opened “for the application.”
In practice, it looks like this: both spouses deposit their salaries there, pay joint expenses from it — groceries, bills, rent if possible. Even if one spouse can’t transfer their salary there due to formalities, they should use the account for purchases: paying with a debit card in stores, withdrawing cash.
When a visa officer sees regular transfers, bill payments, purchases over several months, it’s a logical conclusion: people actually live together and manage finances as a family.
What Counts as Good Proof of Marriage
Not every document needs to contain both spouses’ names. A two-year lease in one spouse’s name and renter’s insurance where one part has one spouse’s name and another part has the other spouse’s name are quite sufficient. The address matches, and this confirms shared residence.
Photographs are also an important document. But they need to be formatted correctly: two photographs on one page with a caption under each. For example: “Me and my wife at Niagara Falls” or “Me and my wife at Times Square.” If photographs are printed with information handwritten on the back, this doesn’t meet USCIS submission standards.
A Mistake in Your Tax Return and How to Fix It
If a tax return was filed with an error — for example, listing the status as “single” instead of “married,” with the correction later sent by the tax service, you should submit both the original return and the amendment. USCIS will see both and understand the situation. If the IRS sent a letter about an error in the amendment (for example, one spouse’s social security number is missing), but the accountant confirms that the data in the system is complete and the amendment has already been accepted, this can be submitted as an additional document. The key is to explain what happened and provide both versions of the document.
Why the Minimum Doesn’t Work in Immigration
There’s a natural desire to submit only what’s required, but when obtaining an immigration visa, this is a strategy against yourself. An open and active joint account may be the only document that will resolve a visa officer’s doubts about the authenticity of the marriage. Three months of good activity is already grounds for trust. Six months is pressure on the visa officer, who cannot refuse without clear suspicions of fraud.
Rerouting your salary to a joint account can be simple: one call to your employer, and the new details will be used for the next transfer. The same applies to your spouse. And then paying from the joint account with a card in stores — it’s a matter of one hour of routine, but it often means the difference between approval and rejection.
