What student visa officers check

Every student visa requires admission to a recognised institution, proof of funds for tuition and living costs, and a credible intention to study. F-1 students receive Form I-20 from their school, while Australia assesses whether a subclass 500 applicant is a genuine student.

Students can usually work a limited number of hours, and after graduation they may switch to a work permit, such as OPT in the US or a post-study visa elsewhere.

Before a US interview, students pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete the DS-160 and must show ties to their home country. F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours a week during term, and after graduation they can receive 12 months of OPT, plus a 24-month extension for STEM degrees. In Australia, subclass 500 holders may work a limited number of hours per fortnight while their course is in session. Full-time students in Poland who hold a residence permit for study can work without a separate work permit.
