If you’re waiting for an Express Entry invitation, start gathering documents right now. The longer you delay preparation, the higher the risk of missing the 60-day deadline for submitting after receiving an invitation — this is a critical period when IRCC will not grant you any extensions.

Work Experience and Employment History

Start by collecting documents about your work experience — both in Canada and abroad. You will need letters from your employers, pay stubs (payslips) and any other supporting documents you plan to submit. By gathering all of this in advance, you will avoid rushing and be able to organize your materials in the proper order.

Work documents are the foundation of your application, so make sure they are current and contain the necessary information about your position, hiring date, and salary.

Passport and Personal Status Documents

Make sure your passport is in good condition: check its validity dates, stamps, and markings. You will also need photographs in accordance with permanent resident specifications.

Also prepare birth certificates, marriage certificates, custody documents (if you have children), and name change certificates. If you have reports on your status in Canada, a UCI number, and travel history, write all of this down separately.

Language and Education

Documents proving your English or French language proficiency are mandatory. Obtain your test reports for IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core and keep them with you. These are standard tests that IRCC accepts for assessing language competency.

Also prepare your education documents — diplomas, certificates, transcripts. If your diploma was issued outside Canada, you may need a credential assessment.

Police Clearance, Finances, and Documents for Special Categories

Police clearance certificates are among the longest documents to obtain. In some countries, the process takes months, so start the process as early as possible. Do not miss the 60-day submission deadline due to delays in getting your police clearance.

If your application type requires proof of financial means, prepare bank statements and other financial documents in advance. For some programs, this requirement is not mandatory, so clarify the specific requirements for your category.

Your History in Canada and Abroad

If you are already in Canada, collect all documents about your residence status: your UCI number, details of permits issued to you (work permit, study permit), and your entry and exit history.

For your entire personal history over the last 10 years, compile a record with no gaps. Include all countries you have visited and the periods you spent in them. This is required for background verification.

Keep Your Express Entry Profile Current

Remember that the invitation is sent based on your profile in the Express Entry pool. If the information in your profile is outdated or incorrect, it may delay your invitation or result in a rejection. Regularly check your information and update it whenever there are any changes in your qualifications, language ability, work experience, or family status.

When the invitation arrives, you must be fully prepared: all documents collected, scanned, and organized. This will allow you to submit your application without rushing and on day 60, rather than on the very last day of the deadline.
