On 4 July 2026, the UK opened a new Global Talent Visa track specifically for designers. Before this, it was almost impossible for designers to get this visa — it required volunteer projects for non-profit organisations. Now the requirements have become much simpler, and the first approvals are already coming in with a three-month processing time.

Which designers can get the visa

The design track within Global Talent covers:

  • Graphic design and anything related to visuals
  • Product design (though it’s usually classed under IT, the design route is often easier)
  • Industrial design
  • Interior and landscape design
  • Fashion design
  • Other design fields

Design is classified under the arts track, which is one of the easiest Global Talent routes in the world. Requirements here are lower than in the US and France, and far lower than for IT specialists.

Three recognition criteria

You need to prove your professional level through one of three ways:

Media publication. A mention of your work in the press with critical coverage is a sufficient sign of recognition. This could be an article about your project, a mention in a design magazine, or a book featuring your work.

Award. Any award, even at a regional level, will do. National prizes aren’t required.

Proof of appearance. Any design-related activity that doesn’t fall under the first two criteria: work mentioned in the press, magazine publications, work on film projects, well-paid commercial projects, conference talks, mentoring, lectures.

To get approved, you need to satisfy any two of the three criteria. This significantly simplifies the task compared to requirements for other tracks.

Letter from a UK organisation

The second mandatory requirement is an endorsement letter from a UK organisation involved in design. This can be a challenge for those without contacts in the UK. In such cases, help from an organisation that oversees the programme can make it easier to find a partner and prepare the required document.

Application process and timelines

Once you’ve prepared the two recognition criteria and obtained a letter from a UK organisation, you submit your application. Processing takes three months — this is the current standard timeframe for the arts track in the programme.

The first approvals under the new designer track have already started coming in, showing that the requirements are set at a reasonable level and accessible to a wide range of professionals.

Residency and the path to a passport

The Global Talent Visa is issued for five years without being tied to an employer. This means you get the right to live and work in the UK independently, growing your own business or working for yourself. After five years, you can apply for citizenship.
