Status of Ukrainians in Slovakia

Temporary protection in Slovakia is called dočasné útočisko and follows the EU decision. Since 6 August 2026, Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 applying for new or repeated protection must document their military registration, and those aged 23 and over must also prove lawful exit from Ukraine.

Students hold temporary residence for the purpose of study and need a new basis to stay after graduation. In certain cases the territorial exception lets a foreigner apply for residence from inside Slovakia without a visa.

Applications for temporary protection are filed at foreign police departments. The status allows work without a separate permit, access to healthcare and schooling for children. The stricter rules for men do not apply to women. Anyone who obtains protection in another EU country must have the Slovak status cancelled.
