Temporary protection in Ireland

Ireland grants people fleeing the war in Ukraine temporary protection with the right to live, work and claim social welfare. The government has gradually reduced support: newcomers in state accommodation receive lower payments, while households hosting Ukrainians get the Accommodation Recognition Payment.

Rents are much lower outside Dublin and other big cities, and planning for the end of the scheme means comparing Irish residence options with a move elsewhere.

Ukrainians with temporary protection receive a Personal Public Service (PPS) number, which is needed for work, welfare and healthcare. The status allows holders to work, study and set up a business without a separate permit. Naturalisation requires five years of reckonable residence within the last nine, and not every immigration permission counts toward it. Ukrainian qualifications are assessed by QQI through its NARIC service, often the first step toward work in a regulated profession.
